Why is “pra” used as opposed to “quando”?
Silvia, você prefere usar WhatsApp ou Facebook pra mandar a mensagem?
It sometimes helps to think of the English phrase “in order to” whenever we use the Portuguese ‘para’ before a verb. That is, if you can say in English, “in order to send” than the best Portuguese phrase is ‘para mandar.’ So in this case, ‘você prefere usar WhatsApp ou Facebook pra mandar a mensagem?’ (do you prefer to use WhatsApp or Facebook in order to send a message?)
Bom dia! I love the lesson!
‘At school’ in Portuguese is ‘na escola’, but why is ‘at home’ ’em casa’, not ‘na casa’? @.@
I wish I had a clear explanation for you Amy, but this is simply one of those where it is easier to memorize the answer. “em casa” means ‘at home’ and “na casa” means ‘in the house.’ So in the case of “casa” it is merely an exception, which I realized doesn’t help you with “na escola” can mean both ‘at school’ and ‘in the school’
Oh thank you! I understand. :)))))
