Elementary 14: I Love Teaching Children

MP3 Audio (Lesson) | MP3 Audio (Dialog)

After today’s lesson we will all feel like we need to go back to elementary school, unless of course you already know how to calculate the area of a trapezoid. Just kidding, but after this lesson you will be able to identify some basic shapes in Portuguese.

A: Você é professora do primário, não é?
You are an elementary school teacher, right?
B: Sou sim, adoro meu trabalho.
Yes, I am, I love my job.
A: E o que você está ensinado agora?
And what are you teaching now?
B: Bom, essa semana estamos aprendendo as formas básicas: quadrado, retângulo, círculo, triângulo, etc.
Well, this week we are learning the basic shapes: square, rectangle, circle, triangle, etc.
  A: E as crianças gostam?
Do the children like it?
B: Gostam, mas para alguns é difícil de entender a diferença entre paralelogramo e trapézios.
They do, but for some it is difficult to understand the difference between parallelogram and trapezoid.
A: Eu também nunca entendia bem essas diferenças.
I never understood those differences very well either.
B: Bom, se precisar, pode voltar para a escola primária também, meu amigo!
Well, if you need to, you can come back to elementary school too, my friend!

Why is the line ‘E o que você está ensinado agora?’ with ‘ensinado’ rather than ‘ensinando’?

My understanding is that ‘ensindado’ is the past participle but ‘ensinando’ would be the present continuous.

Would it be incorrect to say: ‘E o que você está ensinando agora?’

You caught us! That’s a typo and should read “ensinando”!

OK Orlando I am stuck. When you and Sonia begin your discussion after the ‘ Bom se precisar…..line, what I’m hearing from Sonia to you is, ‘Sabe que quando eu tô pensando aqui se ela tâ dizendo pra ele voltar pra escola primária ele devia ter falado………….and the rest I cannot get.. ??? I’m am trying to get used to the speed of how the language is actually spoken in Brasil. So I have to replay it many times to slow it down in my head. Here, I am a little overwhelmed and can really use your help. Thanks as always.

      Oi Donald,
Sorry, I have replayed that portion three times, and I am not sure what part you are referring to. Could you by chance give me the minutes and seconds into the lesson? Sorry, I tried.

Great. It’s at the 6;28 mark immediately after you are telling Sonia, ‘I just love how you and I are nervous about teaching the word trapezoid and parallelogram, and she says, Sabe que quando……….? That is an excellent idea about the premium package. I will most certainly make the investment. BTW your enthusiasm as I hear in your voices, is infectiously contagious. Please keep it up.

OK, got it. Sônia said, “… ele devia ter falado ‘eu nunca entendi’, aquela diferença que você pegou muito bem, né?” meaning, “he should have said, ‘I never understood’, that difference that you got very well, right?”
          There you go!

            Thank you Orlando.
