Be honest, even in your native language it is hard to understand the flight announcements at airports, right? But don’t worry, we’ll get you prepared for them in Portuguese, and with luck you’ll even you’re your flight and it will get off on time.
Hi Orlando!
I have a few questions. I’m only starting to learn different conjugations, so I apologize if I’m completely off the mark!
1. The “embarque” in the first line seems to be imperative. Is that correct?
2. What is the “embarque” in the second line then? Is it subjunctive? And is it “o embarque” because “embarcar” is a reflexive verb? And does “o” refer to “a gente”?
Thank you so much!
Keiko
Hi Keiko. Sure enough, “embarcar” is the verb and “o embarque” is the noun. In the dialog you heard “embarque imediato” (immediate boarding) and then “para o embarque” (for the boarding). My guess is that part of the challenge for you (and it’s my fault) is that the translation in the dialog was “calling us to board” when it would have been more accurate to say “calling us for boarding.”
All that to say that “o embarque” means “the boarding.”
Hi Orlando,
Thank you so much for the super prompt response. It sounds like I overcomplicated things! “Embarque” in the first line is a noun, hence the adjective “imediato” right after it (which I didn’t see at first). And now I also understand what the second “embargue” is. Your explanation is very helpful, and your program has made my Portuguese learning easier and much more fun. Thank you so much!
Keiko
